OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Bucknell senior outfielder Chris Cannizzaro has been selected to a 30-man shortlist for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced this week.
Official Senior CLASS Award Release
Cannizzaro, a native of Staten Island, New York, joins fellow Poly Prep alumnus Tyler Wincig as Bison to be selected to the 30-man shortlist for the award since 2019. Bucknell has had two Senior CLASS Award All-Americans, with Ryan Gryskevicz (2007) and Brett Smith (2017) each earning Second Team honors.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior or graduate student and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
A psychology major, Cannizzaro has enjoyed a good start to his senior season for the Bison, hitting .333 to date with two home runs and 23 hits overall. Off the field, Cannizzaro serves as a student-athlete ambassador for the Tunnels to Towers Foundation. A team captain this season, Cannizzaro has played and started 79 games as a Bison, and was Bucknell's opening day starter at right field as a first-year in 2019. On Tuesday against Saint Joseph's, Cannizzaro recorded his 100th career hit for the Orange and Blue.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches, and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character, and competition.
