WEST POINT, N.Y. – Xander Rice scored a career-high 25 points for Bucknell, but Army used 21 from Jalen Rucker and a big rebounding advantage to defeat visiting Bucknell 73-60 on Wednesday night at Christl Arena.
Andre Screen recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Andrew Funk tallied eight points and a career-high eight assists for the Bison, who fell to 7-22 overall and 4-13 in the Patriot League. Army (14-15, 8-8 PL) snapped a six-game losing streak thanks in large part to the guard trio of Rucker, Josh Caldwell (19), and Aaron Duhart (12), who combined for 52 of the team's 73 points.
Bucknell came in hot offensively in recent weeks and Army had conceded 183 points in its last two games, but the Black Knights were strong defensively and on the glass in this one. They held the Bison to 42.3 percent shooting and parlayed a 39-24 rebounding margin into a 23-8 edge in second-chance points.
Army led 39-26 after an 8-0 run to end the first half, and the hosts stretched that margin to as many as 24 at 64-40 after a Charlie Peterson free throw with 7:44 to go. Bucknell did get back in it to the point where they forced Army to win the game at the foul line.
The Black Knights were held to one field goal in the final 8:20, and Bucknell used a 19-5 run to get as close as 10. Josh Bascoe's driving layup made it a 69-59 game with 1:04 to play, but the Bison couldn't get a couple of late shots to drop, and Army went 4-for-6 at the charity stripe in the last minute.
Army shot 50.9 percent overall and went 9-for-19 from 3-point range. The Black Knights committed more turnovers than Bucknell (15-14) but finished with a 21-10 lead in points off turnovers.
Funk saw his streak of nine straight double-digit scoring games come to an end, but he assisted on six of Bucknell's first eight baskets and finished with a career-high eight helpers. That total came on the floor where his older brother Tommy set the Army and Patriot League records for career assists.
Rice made his first three 3-pointers of the night to help the Bison to a 9-7 lead, but Army scored the next nine in a row to take the lead for good.
Rice's transition bucket off a feed from Bascoe brought the Bison within 31-26 with 2:29 left in the half. Army called a timeout and then outscored Bucknell 8-0 over the remainder of the period to go up by 13 at intermission.
Bucknell wraps up the regular season on Saturday at home against Boston University at 2 p.m. The game can be seen on WQMY-TV and ESPN+, and it will be Senior Day and Fan Appreciation Day at Sojka Pavilion. | TICKETS
