LEWISBURG, Pa. – Nick Delp was recognized as the co-EIWA Wrestler of the Week following his victory over an All-American.
During the Bucknell wrestling team's dual finale at No. 12 Oklahoma State, the sophomore 157 pounder knocked off then No. 18 Wyatt Sheets by a 7-5 decision. He shared this week's EIWA Wrestler of the Week award with Lehigh 165 pounder Brian Meyer, who also topped an All-American.
Delp's victory over Sheets, a two-time NCAA qualifier and 2021 All-American, was hard fought. He scored their bout's opening takedown, which was also the Bison's first of the dual, with just over a minute remaining in the opening frame; he added an escape off of a restart to take a 3-0 lead into the middle stanza. At the end of the second period, he held a 5-2 edge, bolstered by registering another takedown and ceding only two escapes.
With Sheets attempting a third-period rally, Delp pulled off a reversal with just under a minute left to flip a tight 5-4 lead into a more comfortable 7-4 advantage. After Sheets escaped, Delp held off a late shot to secure his first career victory over a top-20 opponent.
It was Delp's second career win over a nationally ranked opponent, as he previously picked up a 9-4 decision over then No. 29 Robert Kanniard of Rutgers at December's MatMen Open.
This is the first season the EIWA has awarded Wrestler of the Week accolades, making Delp the second Bison to receive them. Sophomore 133 pounder Kurt Phipps previously took home this award following his performance during Bucknell's tri-dual with Buffalo and Lock Haven.
Delp and the Bison next compete at the 2022 EIWA Championships from Saturday, March 5 to Sunday, March 6 at Cornell's Newman Arena at Bartels Hall.
