Women's Tennis Edges Villanova, 4-3, in Dual Match Opener

First Year Anna Lajos clinches team win with three-set victory
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team edged Villanova, 4-3, in its first dual match of the 2021-22 campaign on Saturday at the Central PA Tennis Center.
First year Anna Lajos clinched the Bison's team triumph with a three-set victory at fifth singles. In addition, Bucknell secured a hard-fought doubles point, with two of its three wins coming by tiebreaker.
Lajos was a 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 victor over Bella Steffen. Her fellow first year, Whitney King, was an impressive 6-4, 6-0 winner over 2021 All-Big East First Team selection Emily Strande at second singles.
Tyne Miller rounded out the Bison's singles victors, dispatching Emma Brogan in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in the third position.
King also teamed with senior captain Daniela Bellini for a 7-6 decision over Strande and Annalise Klopfer, also a 2021 All-Big East First Team honoree, at first doubles.
Miller and Laurel Utterback were 6-4 winners at second doubles while Lajos and Madi Sebulsky secured a 7-6 victory at third doubles.
The Bison next hit the road to face off against Penn State on Friday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. Head coach Tammy Cecchini is a Penn State alumna. As a Nittany Lion, she played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for three seasons. The two-year team captain was also named the 1991 Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Year.
