Women's Tennis Freshman Earns Award After Winning Two Titles
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Whitney King from the Bucknell women's tennis team was named the Bison Athlete of the Week.
The freshman was recognized following her standout performance at Navy's Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational, which was held Sept. 10-12. In just her second weekend of collegiate competition, she won an individual title at 'B' Courage singles and teamed with senior captain Daniela Bellini to capture the championship at 'A' Honor doubles.
In the 'B' singles final, King toppled Navy's Samantha Johns, who went an impressive 7-1 as a freshman last spring, by a 6-4, 6-2 margin. To reach the finals, she posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Navy's Katreina Corpuz and a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win over Fairleigh Dickinson's Aleksandra Vorozheikina, a senior and two-time All-NEC honoree.
In the 'A' doubles title match, King and Bellini defeated Navy's Jillian Taggart, a 2021 All-Patriot League First Team member, and Emily Tannenbaum by a decisive 8-3 margin. During Moore Invitational action, they also shut out Binghamton's Caterina Casadei and Lara Kaplan, 8-0, edged St. Bonaventure's Anastasia Gubanova and Andrea Roque, 8-6, and clipped Navy's Corpuz and Meghana Komarraju, 8-7.
King is the first women's tennis player to be tabbed as the Bison Athlete of the Week since the 2015-16 school year, when Maria Cioffi was twice recognized during the spring dual season. The last women's tennis player to earn Bison Athlete of the Week accolades in the fall was Lauren Lucido; in 2009, Lucido was honored for winning the Bucknell Invitational's Flight A singles crown for the second-straight year.
King and the Bison return to the court at Toledo's Rocket Invite on Oct. 1-2. That tournament will conclude their fall schedule.
