WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Playing a top-10 opponent from the Atlantic Coast Conference for the second time this week, the Bucknell men's soccer team made significant strides defensively in a 2-0 loss to seventh-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday night at Spry Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Bennett Schwartz made a career-high eight saves as the Bison were kept under pressure by the reigning NCAA quarterfinalists. The Demon Deacons, who are nationally ranked for the 87th straight week, including the last 67 in the top 10, bounced back from a season-opening 2-0 loss to VCU. Bucknell fell to 0-2 after dropping a 7-0 verdict at No. 4 North Carolina on Thursday.
Kyle Holcomb, coming off a team-best nine-goal season a year ago, paced Wake Forest with a goal and an assist. He helped get the Demon Deacons on the board just 10:33 into the match when he criss-crossed with Omar Hernandez at the top of the box, and Hernandez fired a low shot inside the left post.
Wake Forest hit the woodwork twice and forced Schwartz into a couple of tricky saves, but the margin remained 1-0 at halftime. The Bison, who drew 13 fouls in the game, created a couple of chances off set pieces, and Alex Clarke found some space in the area but his curling shot went wide of the left post.
The Demon Deacons added a second goal in the 52nd minute. Defender Prince Ampsonah played a ball down the middle to Jake Swallen, who laid it off for Holcomb at the 18. Holcomb cut by one defender and finished from close range.
Bucknell's best look in the second half came in the 63rd minute, when a clean header from Patrick O'Hara flashed wide left.
The Bison now start their four-game "saint" series, with the next four matches coming against Saint Peter's, Mount St. Mary's, St. Bonaventure and Saint Francis (Pa.). The Saint Peter's game will take place in Jersey City next Saturday at 2 p.m.
