JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Maura Fiamoncini qualified for her third straight NCAA Championships on Thursday afternoon after placing fifth in the NCAA East Preliminary on the campus of the University of North Florida. Â
"Maura was very focused and business-like today," said Head Coach Kevin Donner. "She had a bad technical opening round, which puts some pressure on the athletes, because there are only three rounds at this meet. Her second throw was much better, and was over 53 meters which pretty much locked her into the top 12 and a trip to Eugene. She was seeded sixth, and finished fifth, which will put her in the second flight at the NCAA Meet in two weeks, which will give her a nice advantage."
Fiamoncini posted a mark of 173-11, marking the sixth straight meet that the senior from Mount Carmel, Pa. has eclipsed 170 feet. Â
In 2019, Fiamoncini became the first Bison on the women's side to qualify for multiple NCAA Championships indoors or outdoors, and is just the third Bison from the men's or women's program to qualify for three NCAA Championship meets, joining Hall-of-Famers Thomas McLean and George Buckheit. Â McLean qualified for three straight Outdoor Championships from 1975-77, while Buckheit qualified for three years straight from 1977-79.Â
Fiamoncini's fifth-place finish in the field of 48 comfortably qualified her for the NCAA Championships, where the top 12 from the East and West Preliminary advance.  Kylee Carter of Auburn took the top spot on the day (183-9), followed by Marie-Therese Obst of Georgei (179-0).  Pennsylvania native Madison Wiltrout of UNC finished third (178-1), while Kelechi Nwanaga of Florida State was one spot ahead of Fiamoncini in fourth (174-11).  Â
Ashlyn Ramos also competed for the Bison on Thursday evening in the 10k, finishing 37th overall (35:44.30). Â Ramos completed a tremendous junior season on Thursday with her second NCAA berth of 2021 after competing at the NCAA Cross Country Championships earlier this year. Â Ramos earned a Patriot League title in cross country, while also breaking the school record and winning the 10k at the Patriot League Championships earlier this year. Â Â
Fiamoncini moves on to the Outdoor Championships on June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon at Hayward Field. Â
