LEWISBURG, Pa. – On the heels of a strong second-place finish at the Patriot League Championships last week, four members of the Bucknell rowing team have earned All-Patriot League honors. Sophomore Caroline Brandt and junior Erin Sullivan were named to the All-Patriot League First Team, while junior Kate Meerscheidt and freshman Juliette Gaggini garnered Second Team honors.
Brandt and Sullivan helped power Bucknell's Varsity Eight, which turned in a stellar spring season. That crew went unbeaten in the regular season and then finished a close second to Navy at the Patriot League Championships. The Bison finished 2.7 seconds behind the Mids, but they pulled away from Boston University to claim the silver medals and clinch second place in the team standings in the seven-team field.
Earlier in the year, the Varsity Eight posted home dual wins over Colgate, Delaware and Connecticut, and also took first place at the George Cup on the Occoquan River. The 1V8+ was twice named the Patriot League Boat of the Week.
Brandt, who rowed in the 5 seat this spring, earned All-Patriot League honors in her first attempt, as no honors were awarded following the cancelation of the 2020 Patriot League Championships due to COVID-19.
Sullivan, a key member of the Varsity Eight's stern pair since her arrival at Bucknell, is now a two-time honoree. She also earned First Team All-Patriot League honors as a freshman in 2019, when she helped power the Bison to PL silver medals.
Gaggini was thrown right into the fire as a first-year coxswain in the Varsity Eight. She was one of only three freshmen to earn All-Patriot League honors this year, joining Colgate's Genna Lamphier and Navy's Lauren Day.
Meersheidt earned her first All-Patriot League citation after a stellar spring in the Second Varsity Eight. The Bison 2V8+ went 4-0 in the regular season and then earned silver medals at the Patriot League Championships. Those points were key in helping the team secure runner-up honors.
Meersheidt, who was a 2020 CRCA Scholar-Athlete honoree, rowed in the 6 seat in the 2V8+, which finished four seconds behind Navy and at least eight seconds ahead of every other crew in the field. Earlier in the spring, the Bison posted dual wins over Colgate, Delaware, Connecticut and Fordham. Meersheidt now has two career Patriot League silver medals, as she rowed with the runner-up Varsity Four as a freshman in 2019.
Navy won the 2021 Patriot League title with 54 points, followed by Bucknell with 47 and Boston University with 43. Colgate (32), Holy Cross (28), Lehigh (26) and Loyola (19) rounded out the field. Navy's Varsity Eight was named the Patriot League Boat of the Year, and Navy's Joe Schlosberg was selected as the Coach of the Year.
