LEWISBURG, Pa. – Head coach Dave Cecchini announced Friday that seniors Grayson Cherubino, Tarrin Earle, Dominic Lyles and Jacob Russ will serve as the Bucknell football team's captains in 2021.
"I'm thrilled to have all four of these young men serve as captains this fall," Cecchini said. "They are all great leaders who personify our core values of attitude, character and toughness."
Cherubino is entering his fourth season as a starter on the Bison defensive line. The class of 2022 leader with 19 career starts, he has appeared in all but two of Bucknell's games during his time in Lewisburg to date. He paced Bison defensive linemen in tackles in both 2018 (35) and 2019 (33); in a 2021 spring campaign halved by injury, he posted five tackles, 2.5 of which went for a loss, and forced a fumble. The 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 selection has recorded 73 tackles (34 solo), 14.5 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 24 career games.
Earle has appeared in 14 career games at quarterback, completing 79 of 150 passes for 693 yards and five touchdowns. A dual threat, he has also run for 76 yards on 58 carries. During the 2021 spring campaign, he threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns on 20-for-29 passing, adding 58 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Lyles was recognized on the 2021 Spring All-Patriot League Second Team after leading Bucknell in receptions (31) and receiving yards (291). The wide receiver matched the single-game school record with 14 receptions at Lehigh, recording 103 yards. He also made nine catches for 97 yards in the Patriot League Championship Game. The season before, he paced the Bison in receiving yards (579) and finished second in receptions (36). He enters his senior year with 932 yards and three touchdowns on 74 career catches.
Russ has been Bucknell's starting center for the past two seasons. A steady presence on the offensive line, he has started all eight of his career games at that position.
During the 2021 spring campaign, the Bison earned a spot in the first-ever Patriot League Championship Game. Bucknell, which was picked to finish last in the Patriot League preseason poll, knocked off Pennsylvania rivals Lafayette (38-13) and Lehigh (6-0) to earn a date with defending champion Holy Cross. The Bison placed 11 on the 2021 Spring All-Patriot League Team, headlined by a school-record seven First Team selections. Of Bucknell's 11 All-Patriot League honorees, four return for the upcoming fall season: Lyles, Jared Cooper, Eric Holsinger and Gavin Pringle.
