HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Bucknell's Zach Hartman (165) and Kurt Phipps (133) earned a spot on the podium at the MatMen Open, which concluded on Thursday at the NOW Arena.
Hartman, ranked 15th by Intermat, placed fifth while Phipps claimed eighth. In addition, Hartman, Phipps and Nick Delp (157) each scored at least one win over a nationally ranked opponent during the two-day tournament.
Phipps's 9-4 decision over No. 13 Michael Colaiocco (Penn) was his first career victory over a top-20 grappler while Delp's 9-4 decision over No. 29 Robert Kanniard (Rutgers) was his first career win over a nationally ranked foe. Colaiocco, a 2020 All-American at 125 pounds, was ranked as high as No. 1 in the country at 126 pounds by FloWrestling and The Open Mat during his high-school days.
Hartman twice defeated No. 29 Lucas Revano (Penn), with their meetings coming in the quarterfinals and fifth-place bout. The senior, a two-time All-American, now owns 13 career victories over nationally ranked wrestlers.
Six of the nine Bison who made the trip to Illinois advanced to the MatMen Open's second day. All four of the Bison who fell in the second consolation round of eight were edged by two points or fewer, with Brandon Seidman (125) ceding a 2-0 decision to No. 26 Gage Curry (Pitt), Kolby DePron (149) a 7-6 decision to Al DeSantis (Rutgers), Logan Deacetis (184) an 8-7 decision to No. 19 Zac Braunagel (Illinois) and Mason McCready (197) a 3-1 decision to Cody Baldridge (North Central College).
Six different Bison—Phipps, DePron, Hartman, Deacetis, McCready and Noah Levett (141)—garnered bonus points. Levett, DePron and McCready pinned an opponent while Phipps and Deacetis registered technical falls. Hartman added a major decision while Dylan Chappell (133), who competed unattached, logged a technical fall
Bucknell finished 13th in a 21-team field with 35 points. No. 21 Pitt, Penn and No. 15 Wisconsin were the top-three teams.
The Bison next resume dual action by facing off against Hofstra (12 p.m.) and LIU (3:30 p.m.) on Jan. 8 in Brookville, N.Y. These will be their first EIWA duals of the 2021-22 campaign.
