LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's soccer team fought hard to the final horn but came up a goal short in the season finale against Loyola on Wednesday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Substitute Jake Sweeney scored off a rebound in the 35th minute for the game's lone goal, as the Greyhounds prevailed 1-0 to clinch the Patriot League regular-season title.
Loyola started the day with a two-point lead over American and Holy Cross, but by game time in Lewisburg the Greyhounds had been passed by American after its 3-1 win over Navy. But Loyola fought off a determined Bucknell side in the second half to take all three points and claim the outright crown. American ended up alone in second after Holy Cross dropped a 3-1 decision at Boston University.
The Greyhounds are now 9-6-2 overall and 7-2 in the Patriot League and will head into the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed. Bucknell finishes 4-10-3, 2-5-2.
Bucknell had the first quality chance of the match 12 minutes in. Leading scorer Jordan Miller outran a Loyola center back to get on the receiving end of a long service from Alex Clarke, but Miller's rising shot went over the bar.
Loyola started to close in in the final 20 minutes of the half. Freshman goalkeeper Logan Kinajil-Moran, who was making his second career start, punched away a Loyola corner kick. Defender Jordy Luchies ran onto the loose ball and drove a hard, low shot toward an open net, but Bison center back Colin Eifert stretched out a leg to deflect the shot over the bar.
Loyola did get that goal with 10:44 to play in the first half. Loc San back-heeled a pass from the byline to Kelan Swales at the edge of the 6-yard box. Swales shot was saved by Kinajil-Moran, but the freshman Sweeney punched in the rebound for his first goal of his career.
After managing just the one shot from Miller in the first half, the Bison were much brighter going forward in the final 45 minutes. Chris Masur set the tone early in the half with a low dart from outside the area, forcing Loyola goalkeeper Chase Vosvick to make a diving save.
The Bison attempted five shots and three corner kicks in the second half but could not find an equalizer.
"I'm very proud of our group," said interim head coach Matt Brown after the match. "Obviously the results were not what we would have liked, but this season was a learning experience. Playing a tight 1-0 game with the league champions shows that we are not very far off. The future is very bright here. We are going to use this experience to help us carry on. The foundation is here, now we just need to finish building the house."
Loyola finished with a 10-6 shot advantage and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Kinajil-Moran tallied four saves.
