RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Carlos Carvalho won a three-setter for his first collegiate singles victory, and sophomore Tim Zelikovsky also picked up a three-set singles win on Friday as the Bucknell men's tennis team got started at the River City Open.
Richmond's fall tournament consists of 22 four-man singles flights and 11 four-team doubles flights, with round-robin play on tap over the course of three days.
Each of Bucknell's four entrants got two singles contests in on Friday, and marathon matches were the order of the day.
Both of Carvalho's matches went the distance to a 10-point third-set tiebreaker. His first career win was a 6-2, 2-6, 10-4 verdict over Zach Theodossiou of College of Charleston. Carvalho dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 decision to George Mason's Hayden Postin, and he will vie for a winning weekend when he faces Luis Reis of Longwood on Saturday morning. Reis split his two matches on Friday, beating Theodossiou in straight sets and losing to Postin 10-8 in the third.
Zelikovsky entered the tournament with a 4-2 singles record this fall, and he upped his victory total by coming from behind to beat George Mason's Herman Jentoft 4-6, 6-4 10-5. Zelikovsky took a straight-set loss against Zac Larke of College of Charleston, and he will face Villanova's Anthony Prokurat on Saturday. Prokurat is also 1-1, with a win over Jentoft and a loss to Larke.
Senior Ryan Jurist lost both of his singles tilts on Friday, but both were very tight. Jurist, playing for the first time since the season-opening Bucknell Invitational more than a month ago, fell 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to Richmond's Ricky Bell and 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 to Andre Limon of College of Charleston. Next up for Jurist is Rosen Naydenov, who is also 0-2 after straight-set losses to the same two opponents.
Also in action on Friday was junior Michael Owen, who fell 6-4, 6-3 to College of Charleston's Ben Husum and 6-4, 6-4 to Luke Garner. Richmond's Josh Keitelman, who started the tournament 1-1, is next up on Saturday.
In doubles action, Jurist and Zelikovsky dropped a 6-2 decision to Jake Fellows and Harry Yang of Georgetown.
The action resumes on the courts at Richmond and the Collegiate School on Saturday at 8 a.m.
