LEWISBURG, Pa. – For his performance at the EIWA Championships, Drew Phipps took home Bison Athlete of the Week accolades.
Phipps became Bucknell's ninth EIWA runner-up. The senior, who entered the tournament as the fifth seed at 197 pounds, also secured his third-straight spot on the EIWA podium.
To reach his first career EIWA title bout, Phipps stunned top-seeded Patrick Brucki (Princeton) by a 7-4 decision. Notably, Brucki, Intermat's sixth-ranked wrestler, placed fourth at the NCAA Championships and won an EIWA crown a year ago.
The day before his upset of Brucki, Phipps was a 5-2 winner over Robert Hetherman (Sacred Heart) and a 9-3 victor over fourth-seeded Jacob Koser (Navy). He was ultimately felled by second-seeded Ben Darmstadt (Cornell), Intermat's fifth-ranked wrestler and a 2018 All-American, in the championship bout.
Phipps and Zach Hartman (165) punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships, slated for March 19-21 at U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minn. They will be making their second-straight appearance at NCAA wrestling's premier event.

This is Phipps's third career Bison Athlete of the Week nod. On Feb. 11, 2019, he was recognized for knocking off then No. 4 Rocco Caywood (Army West Point) by a 7-3 decision. On Jan. 22, 2018, he was honored for going 2-0 during the Bison's duals against Harvard and Brown; most notably, he upset then No. 16 C.J. LaFragola (Brown), 6-4, in sudden victory overtime to earn his first career win over a ranked opponent.
Phipps is the second wrestler to be selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week in 2019-20. Jaden Fisher was previously recognized on Jan. 27 for his role in Bucknell's victories over Sacred Heart and Drexel.
