About the Bison
- Bucknell makes its 2020 spring debut this week at the Martin Downs Collegiate, hosted by UNC Greensboro. Patriot League rivals Holy Cross and Lehigh will join the Bison as part of what should be an evenly matched 14-team field. The tournament features a pair of top-70 teams in the latest Golfweek rankings in James Madison (48) and UNCG (66), and Bucknell (199) is lumped in a group of eight teams ranked between 120-202.
- Bucknell is coming off an outstanding fall season, highlighted by second-place finishes in each of the first three tournaments. The Bison also added a third, fourth and sixth-place finish among their six events, and they finished in the top third in all but one tournament.
- Bucknell posted a 291.3 team scoring average in the fall, including three straight sub-par rounds in the month of September. The low mark was a 279 in the second round of the Dartmouth Invitational.Â
- Junior Chris Tanabe led the Bison with a 72.1 average, including six sub-par rounds among his 15 rounds played in the fall. Tanabe, who won the Pennsylvania Amateur last summer, shot 68-65 to claim the Dartmouth Invitational. That was one of four top-10 finishes for Tanabe in six fall starts. Tanabe's 72.1 scoring average is the best in team history for a fall season, and it is second-best in any single season behind J.P. Raftery's 71.6 in the spring of 2017.
- Tanabe wasn't the only Bison to perform well in the fall. Sophomore Jason Lohwater and freshman Blake Wisdom both posted 73.5 scoring averages. Senior Peter Bradbeer (74.3) and freshman Jack Gardner (74.6) also had sub-75 averages, and freshman Jackson Bussell just missed with a 75.3.Â
- Head coach Mike Binney will send out Bradbeer, Tanabe, Wisdom, Lohwater and sophomore Dylan Ford this weekend.
- This will be the first of six spring tournaments for the Bison. Next up will be the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley GC in Goodyear, Ariz., Feb. 22-24. Bucknell will also appear in events hosted by Colgate, Villanova and Yale leading up to the 2020 Patriot League Championship on Apr. 24-25 at Hollywood GC in Deal, N.J.
