WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team began its spring campaign on Sunday, hosting the Fordham Rams at the Central PA Tennis Center in Williamsport, Pa. Junior Marwan Abaza won in two sets playing on court one, but the Bison fell 6-1 to the Rams.
Abaza won his first set 6-4, then claimed set two 7-5 to defeat Fordham senior Fabian Mauritzson and move to 1-0 to begin his spring season. Abaza also picked up a 6-4 win in doubles playing alongside of freshman Chunyu Chen. However, the Rams took two of three doubles matches.
Ryan Jurist, Guillermo Torres, and Michael Owen each went three sets before falling to their opponents.
"With such a young team it was really great to not only see everyone really compete, but also get a taste of college tennis," said head coach Bruce Myers.
Abaza is the lone upperclassman on Bucknell's roster. The rest of the team is made up of three sophomores and four freshmen.
"We had four guys playing their first-ever matches and we lost three 3-set matches. No time to worry with a very good Delaware team coming here tomorrow," said Myers.
The Bison are back at it Monday, Jan. 20 when they host Delaware at 1 p.m. After tomorrow's match, Bucknell hits the road to take part in the NJIT Spring Tournament on Jan. 25 and 26.
