UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Led by a 2-over-par 74 from Casey Morrow, the Bucknell women's golf team got out to a terrific start with an opening-round 304 at the Nittany Lion Invitational on Saturday at the Penn State Blue Course. The Bison followed with a 313 in the afternoon round, and they sit in eighth place in a strong 12-team field with one more round to come on Sunday.
Pennsylvania's 36-hole total of 580 is good for a three-stroke lead over second-place Seton Hall, with host Penn State in third at 587. At 617, the Bison are in front of Towson (618), Georgetown (620), Youngstown State (624) and Ohio (632).
Starting on the 11th hole, Morrow began her opening round with 14 straight pars before a couple of late bogeys left her with a 2-over 74. Meredith Langs and Sally Sohn both shot 76, followed by freshman Sahana Paravantavida with a 78.
Paravantavida was even par through 13 holes after stretch of three birdies in a five-hole span. A couple of tough holes later in the round left her with the 78, but she regrouped in the second round and posted a team-best 76. Morrow followed with a 78, Erin Holmes shot 79, and Langs and Sohn both finished with 80s.
Freshman Tatum McKelvey played as an individual and shot 84-79 on the day.
Morrow is the low Bison at 152 overall, putting her in a tie for 24th place. Seton Hall's Madeline Sager is 5-under after rounds of 69-70. She has the individual lead by two shots over teammate Samantha Staudt (72-69), who is playing as an individual.
Bucknell will play with Towson and Akron in Sunday's final round. The Bison will go off the 10th hole, with tee times beginning at 8:56 a.m.
