RANKIN, Pa. – The Bucknell men's cross country took second at the Pitt Panther Open on Friday afternoon at the Carrie Blast Furnace.
The Bison placed four runners in the top 15 in a field of 47 to finish second behind the Panthers, who were hosting their first home meet in 20 years.
"Pitt looked super and I think our guys had a hard time being patient early," said Head Coach Kevin Donner. "We have been training through this meet and double yesterday. Some of our men handled it great, and others struggled. It was good to see Drew back, and I thought we got some nice races from McGill and McMenamin. Campagna ran a great race considering he is a freshman and this is his first collegiate race." Â
Senior Drew Dorflinger led the way, taking ninth by completing the 6K course in 18:22.07. Junior Connor McMenamin (11th, 18:30.40), senior Brendan McGill (12th, 18:33.15) and freshman Domenic Campagna (13th, 18:33.71) finished one after the other to round out Bucknell's top-15 finishers.
Also scoring for the Bison was sophomore Owen Chase, who took 16th (18:40.16). Junior Riley Gardner (18th, 18:50.83), freshman Greg Eisenhower (19th, 18:50.99), sophomore Brendan O'Toole (21st, 18:52.27) and junior Ben Littman (22nd, 18:53.02) also finished in the top half of the field.
Dorflinger missed the 2018 cross country season to injury and looked strong in his return to the course. McMenamin, McGill, O'Toole and Littman all represented Bucknell at the 2018 Patriot League Cross Country Championships.
This was the first time since 2009 the Bison opened their season on the road. They return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. by taking part in Colgate's Harry Lang Invite.
