LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell rowers Natalie Minella, Grace Ott, Alex Rothstein and Katie Slade are recipients of 2019 Scholar-Athlete Awards from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). In order to be eligible, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, and she must have also rowed in her school's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) in at least 75 percent of the team's spring races or in a conference championship event.
Earlier this spring, Minella and Ott claimed two of the 11 positions on the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Both were also All-Patriot League selections following Bucknell's second-place performance at the Patriot League Championships.
Minella was the coxswain in Bucknell's top boat during her junior year, and she is now a two-time all-conference selection. The Varsity Eight outdueled Boston University and Georgetown in quite a battle for the silver medal at the Patriot League Championships. Minella also guided the Varsity Eight to a runner-up finish at the Cooper Invitational and fourth-place finishes at the Dad Vail Regatta and Cherry Hill Invitational this spring.
Off the water, Minella is a sociology major with a 3.72 cumulative grade-point average. She is a Dean's List student and a member of the Bucknell Athletics Leadership Institute. Last year she was part of a student research team that studied the public perception of science and worked to develop a new course, "Science in the Public Eye." She is now a two-time CRCA Scholar-Athlete.
Ott joined Minella on the All-Patriot League Second Team this season after working from the bow seat in Bucknell's Varsity Eight. Ott was also in the 1V8+ at the Dad Vail and Cherry Hill Invitational, and earlier in the spring she helped the 2V8+ to a gold medal at the Cooper Invitational.
Ott is an international relations major with a 3.63 GPA, and she has already done considerable work abroad during her time at Bucknell. She spent the fall of 2018 in Quito, Ecuador as an independent researcher and volunteer. She conducted interviews to learn about the women's movement and penal system reform in Ecuador, and she completed a 30-page research paper in Spanish based on her findings. Ott also spent time in Oita, Japan last summer, where she worked as a public speaking instructor with Japanese students. She is also now a two-time CRCA Scholar-Athlete.
Rothstein, a rising junior neuroscience major with a 3.52 GPA, was a member of Bucknell's Varsity Four that had a terrific 2019 spring season. The V4+ was runner-up at the Patriot League Championships, finishing just three seconds behind Navy in the Grand Final. Earlier in the spring, Rothstein helped the V4+ to a fifth-place finish at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta.
Slade is a rising junior accounting and financial management major with a 3.83 GPA. At the Patriot League Championships, she was part of Bucknell's Second Varsity Eight that claimed silver medals. She also helped the 2V8+ win gold medals at the Cooper Invitational and silver medals at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta.
It was a terrific spring for the Bison on and off the water. Bucknell finished second in all three events at the Patriot League Championships, which led to the second-place team finish behind Navy. Bucknell also took second in the team standings at the Dad Vail this spring, placing a best-ever eight boats into finals. And last week, 40 members of the team were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, including all four of the CRCA Scholar-Athletes.
