LEWISBURG, Pa. – Halie Mariano, a rising senior infielder on the Bucknell softball team, has been selected to represent the Patriot League on the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during the 2019-20 academic year. Mariano will also take over as the president of Bucknell's SAAC next year after serving as vice president in 2018-19, and she will function as the chair of the Patriot League SAAC and as an ex-officio student-athlete representative on the league's Sport Management Committee for the next two academic years.
"Over the past two years, being a member of Bucknell's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has opened my eyes to the larger purpose of collegiate athletics and the voice I have as a student-athlete," said Mariano. "Serving on the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will allow me to take that voice to a larger audience while simultaneously learning from other student-athletes and their institutions. To be able to generate a student-athlete voice within Bucknell, while also collaborating and coordinating with other Division I SAACs allows all SAACs to grow and advocate for student-athletes in the best way possible. Division I SAAC will also provide me with increased exposure to new legislation and the trials and tribulations each sport endures."
During her first three years at Bucknell, Mariano has been heavily involved in campus and community endeavors both on and off the diamond. In addition to her SAAC participation, Mariano is a member of the student advisory board for the Freeman College of Management, and she is a student representative on the Bucknell Committee on Athletics.
Mariano participated in the Bucknell in Nicaragua summer abroad program in 2017, she serves as a First-Year Student Orientation assistant, she is a teaching assistant and learning community leader for the Management 100 course, and she is a member of the Bucknell Athletics Leadership Institute. Off campus, Mariano has volunteered with Mostly Mutts and the local food bank.
Last summer, Mariano worked as a summer meals intern with Foodlink, collaborating with more than 50 organizations to provide free meals to kids in her hometown of Rochester, N.Y.
Mariano is majoring in managing for sustainability and has been a regular member of the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
On the field, she hit a career-high .274 in 2019 for a Bison squad that won 28 games and finished 14-3 in Patriot League play.
The NCAA Division I SAAC is comprised of student-athletes from each of the 32 Division I multisport conferences. Its members provide insight on the student-athlete experience and offer input on rules, regulations and policies that affect their lives on campus. The group's mission is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.
As a member of the NCAA SAAC, Mariano will help generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA. The committee is responsible for soliciting student-athlete responses to proposed NCAA legislation and recommending potential legislation. She will serve in committee meetings and conference calls on behalf of the Patriot League.
"Halie will continue the tradition of strong Patriot League student-athlete representation on the national committee and serve with passion and excellence on behalf the League's more than 5,200 student-athletes," Patriot League Commissioner Jennifer Heppel said. "I very much look forward to working with Halie."
"Congratulations to Halie for the prestigious honor of representing all Patriot League student-athletes on the national Division I SAAC," said Bucknell director of athletics and recreation Jermaine Truax. "Halie has been very active in leadership positions both in Athletics and as a member of the Committee on Athletics and the Student Advisory Board in the Freeman School of Management. This exciting opportunity to interact with a diverse cross-section of student-athletes from Division I schools across the country will not only give Halie a chance to bring forward issues that pertain to her peers in the Patriot League, but she will be able to share new ideas and perspectives with her cohorts here at Bucknell."
Mariano's two-year term with the NCAA Division I SAAC officially began on June 1.
