Men's Tennis Announces Five-Player Recruiting Class
6/4/2019 2:22:00 PM | Men's Tennis
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis coach Bruce Myers announced Thursday a five-player recruiting class set to join the Bison beginning with the 2019-20 season. Chunyu Chen, Per Åström, Michael Owen, Guillermo Torres, and Dave Carvalho join a young Bison roster that earned the fourth seed in the Patriot League Tournament last season.
"With a team returning no seniors and only one junior, I am very much looking forward to keeping the core of this team intact for the next 2-3 years, watching them develop and see how far we can go in the conference," Myers said. "With this class, we have two top-of-the-lineup players who will likely step right into the top three in the line-up, with the remaining three joining returning players, Marwan Abaza, Ryan Jurist and Cooper Bradshaw in giving us options and depth in the back-end of our lineup. I traveled and scoured the country to bring in these type of talented student-athletes to Bucknell. Coming off a five-win Patriot League season, I think we have gotten a good deal better. More importantly, with a spring semester team GPA of 3.54 I am quite confident that this group will help us even improve on that mark in the fall."
The following is a closer look at each recruit:
CHUNYU CHEN | SHENZHEN, CHINA/MOURATOGLOU TENNIS ACADEMY (DIOT, FRANCE)
Has a 12+ UTR … wins in both singles and doubles at a futures events in France … son of Yifeng Chen and Guojing Wang … has one older sister, Jingmei, and one older brother, Yuding.
Quote from Coach Myers – "He trained at the Mouratoglou Academy, which has produced top-ranked players. Chunyu has played at high-level international tournaments in Europe and that experience should translate very well to playing at the D1 level."
PER ASTROM | JONKOPING, SWEDEN/PER BRAHEGYMNASIET
Won the doubles title and was third in singles at the U18 Regional Championships in Sweden … club team, Tabergsdalens Tennisklubb, won regional titles in U14 and U16 and was the runner in the men's age group … son of Benny and Linda Astrom … has one younger brother, Johan … has been an activist for human rights for Amnesty Invitational.
Quote from Coach Myers – "A former player highly recommended I contact Per. I had the opportunity to watch Per play in Sweden and saw a raw and very talented student-athlete. Per is the type of player who will certainly flourish with training and competing at the D1 level and will have every opportunity to play in the top of the lineup. All he lacks is experience, which he will gain at Bucknell."
MICHAEL OWEN | FOLKESTONE, UNITED KINGDOM/THE HARVEY GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Team captain from 2012-18 for school's tennis team … won multiple regional singles and doubles titles from 12U up to open men's age group … two-time 18U runner-up at the Kent County Championships … three-time Kent County mixed doubles champion … 18U Kent County doubles champion … reached multiple finals and semifinals in national competitions … ranked as high as No. 5 in 12U, and ranked in the top 25 in 14U and 16U in the United Kingdom … consistently ranked in the top 10 in the county since the age of 10 … son of Loriann Owen and Michael Owen … has one older sister, Arianne, and one younger sister, Rhiannon … father was the Welsh national 100m champion in 1983 … born in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Quote from Coach Myers – "Michael targeted Bucknell (and vice-versa) two years ago. He passed his A levels very young, and has spent the last eight months training at the Tenerife Tennis Academy in Spain to improve his levels. He has multiple wins over current D1 players and had a UTR of 12, which has improved a great deal. An accomplished singles and doubles player, he should step right into the lineup."
GUILLERMO TORRES | DORADO, PUERTO RICO/LAUREL SPRINGS
Was ranked No. 1 in both singles and doubles in 18U in the Caribbean Section … named to the USTA Junior Leadership Team for the Caribbean Section … won multiple Scholar-Athlete Awards and the MVP Sport Team Award … played at the top of the lineup for teams that won multiple Intersectional Team Championships … member of the 2018 Puerto Rico Davis Cup team for Group II of the Americas in Mexico and Bolivia … a three-star recruit with an 11 UTR … son of Luis Torres and Johana Garcia … has one older sister, Carolina Torres.
Quote from Coach Myers – "Guillermo is one of the top-ranked players in Puerto Rico, and I had the opportunity to watch him play in national tournaments in the US. What impressed me the most about his game is how well it worked on both the slow clay courts and much faster indoor hard courts. More impressive is the fact that his school in Puerto Rico was destroyed during Hurricane Maria, and he had the resolve and tenacity to finish his schooling, in reverse order, in order to graduate and do exceptionally well, all while traveling the US competing in national tournaments."
DAVE CARVALHO | CORAL SPRINGS, FLA./CORAL SPRINGS CHARTER SCHOOL
A four-star recruit with a 12 UTR … transfer from FAU, where he was an economics major … son of Daniel and Cheryl Carvalho.
Quote from Coach Myers – "Davis is a transfer from FAU, but he took last season off from competition. He was one of the top-ranked juniors in the US and has high-level wins at the ITF level, including a Main Draw win in Delray Beach, Florida. Currently a UTR of 12+, I am very much looking forward to having him compete again at a very high level."
