Seventh Player in Program History to Earn the Honor
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Bucknell's Ally Furano has been named an Honorable Mention All-American for her record-breaking efforts throughout the 2019 campaign, the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches announced on Friday afternoon. National Champion Stanford swept the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year honors, while runner-up USC took the most spots on the First Team with three. Michigan was the only CWPA school represented on the Second and Third Team, with one selection to each.
Full Team
Furano enjoyed one of the best individual seasons in Bucknell history during her sophomore campaign for the Orange and Blue. The native of Stamford, Conn. easily surpassed the single-season goals record in points and goals in Bucknell history, while leading the Bison to their second-highest win total in program history. She has already earned First Team CWPA honors this postseason, the first by a Bison player since Hannah Sunday in 2016, and helped lead the Bison to their highest-ever finish at the CWPA Championships after finishing third.
Furano's 123 goals this season are 48 more than the second-highest total in program history (75 by Aubrey Rowe in 2009), and her single-season points total of 178 is 50 points ahead of Rowe's record of 128 that she set in that same season. Additionally, Furano tied for fourth in single-season assists after notching 55 throughout the season. The sophomore attacker played and started all 37 games, and already ranks tenth on Bucknell's all-time list in career goals with 170. Furano tied the single-game points record on March 2 against Gannon after scoring six goals and four assists.
Bucknell also posted tremendous team success during Furano's record-breaking year. The 25 wins for the Bison were the second most in program history behind the 26 wins in the 2008 season. The team came one win short of tying the program record with a win streak of eight, and scored the most goals in team history with 398. The 2019 team also posted the third-highest amount of points in team history.
In the CWPA Tournament, Furano posted four goals and four assists in Bucknell's third-place matchup against ranked Harvard, and scored six goals in the opening round win over George Washington, one short of the school record. For her efforts, Furano was named to the All-CWPA Tournament Team as Bucknell finished third, its best-ever showing at the CWPA Tournament.
Furano becomes just the seventh player in program history to earn Honorable-Mention All-American honors. She also becomes just the fifth player since the 2010 season to earn the distinction. She joins Marta Considine in 2018 and current assistant coach Hannah Sunday in 2016 as honorees in the past four seasons.
