SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Bucknell dominated all three doubles matches and that proved to be the difference as the Bison edged Colgate, 4-2, in a Patriot League men's tennis matchup Saturday at the Drumlins Country Club.
The Bison took a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles contests, including a 6-0 shutout victory by Cooper Bradshaw and Ethan Jacobs on court three. The other two matches had identical 6-2 scores with Max McDonald and Marwan Abaza teaming up for a win on court one and Andrei Vitiuc and Ryan Jurist doing the same on court two.
Colgate won the first two completed singles contests to tie it up at 2-all, but Bucknell rallied to win the next three and the match. Abaza started the run with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court three.
Bucknell's next two points were secured after three-set matches. Bradshaw came out on top, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 on court six, while Jurist was a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 winner on court five.
Those final two close wins proved to be huge as Colgate was nearing a point on court one could have swung the result the other away. Instead the Bison improved to 11-11 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League with their seventh win in nine matches, and the Raiders fell to 7-12 overall and 2-2 in the league.
"A convincing doubles win set the tone and then wins by three players that weren't on the team when we lost to them twice last season helped us seal the victory," Bucknell head coach Bruce Myers said.
Abaza has been on a roll in Patriot League matches, improving to 4-1 in singles. Bradshaw upped his record against league opponents to 3-2. In doubles, Bradshaw and Jacobs moved their league record to an impressive 5-1.
Bucknell snapped a four-match losing streak in the series with Colgate, posting its first win over the Raiders since 2015.
"To go to their home courts and beat them was unbelievable," Myers said. "Full credit to Colgate for how hard they compete for every point."
The Bison are back at the Drumlins Country Club for a Patriot League match against Boston University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Terriers are 7-14 overall and 2-3 in the conference after back-to-back losses to Army West Point (4-1 score) and Lehigh (4-2).
