CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Following his sensational performance during the Bucknell men's lacrosse team's game against No. 17/16 Army West Point, Jarett Witzal was selected as the Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week for the second time this season.
Witzal won 20 of 31 faceoffs, a .645 percentage. Notably, his number of faceoff wins was two shy of his school record set in 2016. He also scooped up a school-record 14 ground balls; he seized the top spot from Jake Clarke, who registered 13 against Penn State during the 2009 campaign.
Witzal's 14 ground balls gave him 69 on the season, good for 10th in the Bison annals. He previously recorded that number during the 2017 campaign. With 249 career ground balls, he stands third in school history; he needs nine to enter a tie for second.
This season, Witzal was previously recognized as the Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week on Feb. 11 for his role in Bucknell's 9-6 victory over Bryant. The senior captain won 13 of 19 faceoffs, including 10 of 11 during the second half to help the Bison string together a 5-1 run. He also collected a game-best eight ground balls.
As a freshman in 2016, Witzal was a four-time Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week. He was also recognized as the Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week after winning 22 of 24 faceoffs, scooping up 12 ground balls and netting his first collegiate goal against Lehigh.
Witzal and the Bison return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. with an away game at Marist.
