LEWISBURG, Pa. – Chadd Cummings broke his own school record to earn a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke on the third night Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships, held at Kinney Natatorium.
Cummings clocked an NCAA 'B' cut time of 54.12, shattering his school record entering the day by .53 of a second. He was one of 14 Bison who reached the finals on Friday, helping the Bucknell men's swimming & diving team maintain its hold on third place with 290 points. Navy (756) and Army West Point (538) remain the top two teams while Lehigh (246) and Boston University (238) complete the top five.
In the preliminaries, Cummings shaved .30 of a second off of his previous school standard (54.65) by touching the wall in 54.35. In the finals, he was narrowly edged by Army West Point's Evan Zhang (53.83). The senior later teamed with Matt McGoey, Charlie McFarland and Liam Pitt to break the school record in the 200 freestyle relay (1:20.82) en route to a fourth-place showing.
Nick Haddad and Jacob Lubinski placed fifth and sixth respectively in the 100 backstroke. Haddad's finals time of 49.55 was good for fourth in school history while Lubinski's time of 50.24 in the preliminaries slotted him eighth in the Bison annals.
McGoey, who yesterday earned a bronze medal in the 200 IM, took seventh in the 400 IM. He swam the lead-off leg of the 200 freestyle relay in 20.60, tying him for eighth all-time in the 50 freestyle with Pitt, who posted that time in yesterday's preliminaries.
Garrett Sommer, who went sixth in the 3-meter dive on Wednesday, added a seventh-place showing in the 1-meter dive. He improved his score to 268.35 but remained seventh in school history.
Pitt logged Bucknell's second-fastest time (49.13) in the 100 butterfly during the preliminaries, bumping Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Harvey (49.22) down to third. The freshman is the first Bison to crack the top five in that event since 2014.
McFarland, who yesterday broke Harvey's 31-year-old record in the 100 freestyle, swam Bucknell's fourth-fastest time (55.72) in the 100 breaststroke during the preliminaries.
The Patriot League Championships conclude tomorrow, with the preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals following at 6 p.m. The event will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
