2/21/2019 9:00:00 PM | Men's Swimming and Diving
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Charlie McFarland broke a Bucknell record that had stood for 31 years on the second night of the Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships, held at Kinney Natatorium.
The senior clocked a time of 20.10 in the 50 freestyle to claim the top spot from Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Harvey, who had held the record (20.17) since the 1988 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. McFarland's record-breaking time earned him a Patriot League silver medal, his first in an individual event.
Through two days, the Bison men's swimming & diving team is third with 159 points, trailing Navy (365) and Army West Point (272). Lehigh (138) and Boston University (137) round out the top five.
Bucknell placed three in the 500 freestyle's finals: Matt Rakovec (11th), Mitch Gavars (14th) and Carter Weiland (16th). Rakovec's time of 4:30.29 slotted him 10th in school history.
Pitt (50 freestyle) and Sean Quinn (200 IM) each took 15th in his respective event; Pitt's time of 20.60 in the preliminaries moved him up to eighth in the Bucknell annals from 10th (20.79).
Entering the day, McFarland owned the program's fifth-fastest time (20.47) in the 50 freestyle. He touched the wall .01 of a second slower than that time in the preliminaries, which earned him a spot in the seventh lane for the 'A' finals.
One of the most decorated swimmers in Bison history, Harvey graduated as the owner of eight individual school records, including the 50 freestyle standard. A four-time East Coast Conference Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet, he twice qualified for the NCAA Championships, where he earned 1988 honorable mention All-America laurels in the 50 freestyle.
The Patriot League Championships continue tomorrow, with the preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals following at 6 p.m. The event will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
