Toomer paces Bucknell with 16 points
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Rapolas Ivanauskas scored 21 points to help Colgate to a 75-64 victory over Bucknell on Tuesday night at Cotterell Court. Avi Toomer scored 16 points to lead the first-place Bison (17-10, 11-4 Patriot League), who have now lost consecutive conference games for the first time in three years. The third-place Raiders (18-10, 10-5) moved within one game of the lead, with Bucknell, Colgate and Lehigh now all separated by just a single game.
Kimbal Mackenzie added 13 points, Nate Sestina had 10, and Jimmy Sotos tallied nine points and a career-high six steals. Bucknell cut a 14-point deficit down to four late in the second half but could not get over the hump.
Tucker Richardson had 11 points and Malcolm Regisford 10 for Colgate, which avenged an 84-81 loss at Bucknell earlier in the year and is now 10-1 at home this season.
"Give Colgate credit, they played like the more desperate team tonight," said head coach Nathan Davis. "I thought we played hard, but Colgate seemed to come up with the loose balls and some key offensive rebounds when they needed them. We played well in stretches, but we just had too many careless plays, and those are hard to overcome against a good team on the road."
Bucknell shot 36.9 percent on the night, including an 8-for-29 showing from the 3-point arc. The Bison also had a hard time finishing at the rim, going 9-for-23 on layups, with Colgate blocking six shots. Meanwhile, Colgate shot 49.1 percent, boosted by a 10-for-19 performance from long distance (4-for-5 in second half).
Richardson picked off an outlet pass and swished a 3-pointer with three seconds left in the first half to give Colgate at 37-30 lead at halftime.
Earlier in the period, Bucknell flipped a seven-point deficit into a three-point lead with an 11-1 run, keyed by five points from Mackenzie. Paul Newman's tip-in put the Bison in front 21-18, but Colgate replied with back-to-back contested threes from Jack Ferguson and Richardson.
The Bison endured a 1-for-11 stretch on the heels of the 11-1 run, and Colgate knocked down five of its six first-half treys in the final 9:18 of the half.
Colgate used a 6-0 spurt to take its first double-digit lead at 43-32 at the 17:04 mark of the second half. The Raiders led 49-37 after a baseline jumper from Regisford, but the Bison cut that deficit in half on back-to-back triples by Toomer and Andrew Funk.
Toomer then picked up an unlucky fourth foul with a bump on the perimeter, and Colgate immediately shot back with eight straight points, fueled by consecutive triples from Francisco Amiel and Ivanauskas.
Suddenly down by a game-high 14 points, the Bison had plenty of fight left. Two straight threes by Toomer ignited a 15-5 run, with Sestina's free throw cutting the margin to four at 62-58.
Ivanauksas responded with a 3-pointer from the right wing, followed by a Sestina layup the other way. Bucknell nearly cut it to two after Toomer drew a charge, but Sotos' 3-point try from the right wing went in and out.
Dana Batt answered with a bucket in the paint, and then after two empty trips, Will Rayman came up with a third-chance tip-in to make it 69-60 with 1:21 to play. Later, Colgate came up with another key offensive rebound on a missed free throw, which led to a Rayman dagger 3-pointer with 51 seconds to go.
The Bison logged a season-high 11 steals in the game, with Sotos' six thefts the most by any active Bucknell player. The Bison committed 12 turnovers to Colgate's 16, but the Raiders compiled a 42-33 rebounding advantage, led by 10 from Rayman.
Bucknell is back in action on Sunday at home against Lafayette at 2 p.m. The Hero Appreciation Day game will be televised on WQMY in Northeast PA.
