DEKALB, Ill. – In a dual where six of 10 bouts were decided by three or fewer points, the Bucknell wrestling team dropped a 24-10 decision to Northern Illinois on Friday night at Victor E. Court.
The Bison (0-1, 0-0 EIWA) and Huskies (1-0, 0-0 MAC) proved evenly matched in their first ever meeting. Northern Illinois won four of the bouts decided by three or fewer points, and got a pin from nationally ranked Brit Wilson at 184 pounds, to emerge victorious.
For Bucknell, Noah Levett (141), Zach Hartman (165) and Drew Phipps (197) scored individual wins. With his 4-1 decision over Gage Braun, Phipps stretched his dual winning streak to 13 bouts; he was last defeated in dual action on Jan. 5, 2018 at Navy.
Hartman was impressive in his debut at 165 pounds, rolling to a 15-7 major decision over Caden McWhirter. Hartman scored four takedowns in the third period and a four-point near fall in the second frame to pick up bonus points for the Bison.
Levett edged Caleb Brooks by a 12-10 decision to get Bucknell on the board. Levett built an early lead and held off a furious Brooks comeback bid to earn his victory.
Darren Miller (133), Matthew Kolonia (149), Jaden Fisher (157) and Frankie Guida, Jr. (174) all fell by just two points. Guida. Jr.'s tight loss came in the first sudden victory period.
