LEWISBURG, Pa. – On the strength of his record-breaking performance against Holy Cross, Brandon Sanders captured his first career Bison Athlete of the Week award.
Sanders broke a 55-year-old school record by making 14 catches against the Crusaders. His 122 receiving yards also represented a new career high total.
Bucknell's previous school record in single-game receptions was 13, set by Tom Mitchell in a 24-21 victory at Harvard on Oct. 3, 1964. Mitchell, a member of the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, graduated in 1966 with multiple school receiving records and went on to play in the National Football League.
Sanders previously exceeded 100 receiving yards in the 2019 opener at Temple, making nine catches for 115 yards. He currently has 328 receiving yards on the year, good for first among Bison despite missing one game due to illness.
Through the season's first six weeks, Sanders is fifth in the FCS in receptions per game (8.5). With 34 catches on the year, he needs just 10 more to match his 2018 total.
Sanders is the first football player to garner Bison Athlete of the Week laurels this school year. In 2018, Joe Lauro (Sept. 30) and Gerrit Van Itallie (Oct. 14) captured the award; Lauro's was recognized for his key role in Bucknell's 19-16 victory at Holy Cross while Van Itallie was honored after filling the stat sheet at Monmouth with eight tackles (seven solo), three tackles for a loss of 14 yards, one sack for a loss of nine yards, two blocked punts and one forced fumble.
Sanders and the Bison return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Colgate.
