This Week in Bucknell Athletics

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- One-sided Patriot League wins for field hockey and men's soccer, and a Massachusetts sweep for the men's and women's swimming and diving highlighted the recent weekend performances, and as the calendar shifts to last week of October, the league title races will be even hotter this week.

The field hockey team blasted Colgate 6-1 at home on Saturday behind two goals and two assists from Kaelyn Long, and now the Bison have a massive game at Lafayette on tap this Saturday. The Leopards are tied for the Patriot League lead (with American) at 4-0, but the Bison are just a game back at 3-1. It should be quite a battle in Easton. Bucknell has outscored its opponents 34-23 this season, while the Leopards have outscored their opponents 36-24.
Men's soccer put together perhaps its most complete performance of the season in a 3-0 home win over Boston University on Sunday. The three points jumped the Bison from seventh to fifth in the Patriot League standings. Bucknell hosts Binghamton in a non-league game on Tuesday, and then Army West Point comes in on Saturday fresh off a 6-1 thumping of Holy Cross. Bucknell will celebrate Senior Day prior to the 4p.m. game against Army.
The women's soccer team also has its Senior Day game coming up on Saturday against American at 1 p.m., in the first leg of a men's/women's doubleheader at Emmitt Field. But first, the Bison have another important Patriot League encounter on Wednesday against Loyola at Emmitt Field. The Bison suffered a tough 1-0 overtime loss at first-place Navy over the weekend, Bucknell is tied for fourth place with Lehigh on nine points, while second-place Loyola is two points ahead with 11.
It's nothing but Patriot League action the rest of the way for the Bucknell football team. A non-league loss at nationally ranked Towson on Saturday came on the heels of an impressive PL road win at Colgate. This week the Bison look to stay in the league title chase when they travel to Lafayette for a 3:30 p.m. game in Easton.
Also headed on the Lehigh Valley this weekend is the volleyball squad. Bucknell has some work to do to get back into playoff position -- the top six qualify for the Patriot League Tournament this year -- and the Bison will have a chance to do just that when they visit Lafayette on Friday and Lehigh on Saturday.
Bison fans have an opportunity to check out the men's and women's swimming & diving teams at Kinney Natatorium for the first time this season when Binghamton comes to town on Saturday for a 1 p.m. meet. Bucknell swept Holy Cross and Boston University on the road this past weekend, getting many strong performances along the way.
The 14th-ranked Bison men's water polo team went 2-2 at the Harvard Invitational last weekend, with one of the losses a hard-fought 9-8 defeat to No. 9 Harvard in the Crimson's home pool. This week the 14-4 Bison head west to San Jose for the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, where they will face three more ranked teams in No. 11 Loyola Marymount, No. 19 San Jose State and No. 20 Cal Baptist.
