LEWISBURG, Pa. --Â Â Jonathan Sousa's 63rd minute goal at the back post stood as the deciding moment on a damp evening at Emmitt Field as Loyola took its first-ever series win over Bucknell, 1-0.Â
Bucknell drops its first ever contest to the perennial Patriot League contender Greyhounds, who were voted as the preseason favorite in the Patriot League after topping the regular season standings a year ago. Bucknell now stands 7-1 all-time against the Greyhounds, snapping a four-game clean sheet streak in addition to the seven-game winning streak against Loyola.
The Greyhounds kept the ball the majority of the first half, controlling the ball 58% of the half. However, Bucknell kept organized in the midfield and defense, limiting the Greyhounds to just one shot on goal in the first 45.Â
That shot came in the tenth minute of play as Loyola's Eddy Rodriguez got a foot on a low cross, but freshman goalkeeper Luke Smith managed to get in the way on the low shot to keep the game tied.Â
The best chance for the Bison came in the 20th minute as Jameson Railey hit a hard free kick that just skipped past the left post from about 23 yards out.
Bucknell came out quickly in the second half, with senior captain Nick King managing a look from distance that went right of the goal.Â
The Bison held the Greyhounds without a shot until the 55th minute, when Barry Sharifi hit a hard shot that went high of the goal from distance.Â
The Greyhounds however, then capitalized on their second shot on goal of the day as Albert Kang clipped a well-weighted chip to the back post that found the foot of an onrushing Jonathan Sousa.Â
Bucknell threw numbers forward to end the game, with the Bison getting one last great look after some nifty work from junior Matt Thorsheim on the left wing helped the Manalapan, New Jersey native find space near the top left corner of the box.Â
Thorsheim looked to curl his shot to the back post, but the shot landed on the right top corner of the net, just high of the goal.Â
Loyola outshot Bucknell 10-6, with a 2-0 edge in shots on goal. The Greyhounds also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Â
The loss snaps a four-game unbeaten streak for Bucknell, which will look to get back on track at No. 21 Navy on Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.     Â
