Men’s Golf Takes Lead after First Round of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Backed by 1-under-par 69s from Peter Bradbeer and Chris Tanabe on Saturday, the Bucknell men's golf team has a two-stroke lead at the halfway point of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison posted a 1-over 281 team score and sit two shots in front of Patriot League rival Holy Cross in a field of 13 teams.
While Bucknell will be gunning for its first team victory in what has been a very successful fall season thus far, Bradbeer, Tanabe, and a host of Bison are within striking distance for the individual title.
Max Palmer of Robert Morris carded a 2-under 68 thanks to an eagle at the par-5 9th hole and two late birdies at 16 and 17. But Bradbeer and Tanabe are just one shot back, along with Colgate's Ryan Skae and Monmouth's Ron Robinson.
It is a tightly bunched leaderboard, with 39 players within five strokes of Palmer, who is the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year. Among them are a trio of Bucknell freshmen in Blake Wisdom (71), Jackson Bussell (72) and Jack Gardner (73).
Bradbeer bounced back from a bogey at the first hole with four birdies at 4, 6, 8 and 12, and he sat at 3-under on the day until a double-bogey at 17 dropped him out of the lead. Likewise, Tanabe was rolling along at 2-under thanks to back-to-back birdies at 6 and 7, but a late double at the par-3 16th pushed him back to even par. Tanabe responded with a birdie on 17 to get back into red numbers.
Wisdom's lone birdie of the day came at No. 9, and he added 15 pars to shoot 71. Bussell birdied the par-3 13th hole and added 14 pars on the way to his 72. Jason Lohwater also had a solid day with a 74, but that score was discarded.
Gardner, Josh Holtschlag (76) and Dylan Ford (77) are all playing as individuals this weekend.
Consistency was key for the Bison in the first round. They rank seventh in the field in total birdies with 11, but their 66 pars are seven more than the next-most in the field (59 by Ottawa).
Bucknell last won this event in 2010, and it last claimed the individual medalist (Dan Bernard) in 2012. The Bison will look for their eighth Bucknell Invitational title on Monday.
