LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell senior center Nate Sestina had two big games to open up conference play last week, and he has been rewarded with Patriot League Player of the Week and Bison Athlete of the Week honors.
The Bison went 1-1 in two road games last week, coming from 26 points behind to beat Army 64-63 on Wednesday before falling to Boston University 87-80 on Saturday. Sestina averaged 24.3 points and 10.5 rebounds in the two games, while converting on 19 of 32 (.594) attempts from the floor and 9 of 15 (.600) from the 3-point arc.
Sestina was the catalyst of Bucknell's historic comeback win at Army. The Bison trailed 39-13 in the opening minute of the second half, but then Sestina exploded for 17 points on 7-for-7 shooting, including three from outside the arc, in a matter of just five minutes. He finished the game with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and the last rebound was a big one. It came with the Bison down by a point in the final 10 seconds, and Bucknell converted it into a transition layup for Avi Toomer at the other end with just 1.6 seconds to play.
The comeback was tied for the 10th-largest in NCAA Division I history. It is also tied for the seventh-largest second-half deficit ever overcome, and the 24-point halftime margin is tied for the sixth-largest overcome.
In Saturday's game at Boston University, Sestina went 10-for-15 from the field and 5-for-7 from 3-point distance on the way to a career-high 27 points. He also recorded nine rebounds and three assists.
Sestina, who earned his first career Patriot League Player of the Week citation, is now averaging 16.3 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. He ranks fourth in the league in scoring, second in rebounding, sixth in field-goal percentage (.511) and third in free-throw percentage (.872).
After playing their last eight games away from home, the 7-7 Bison are back at Sojka Pavilion on Wednesday to face Colgate at 7 p.m.
