Paige Leavy and Cayla Koch Stayed Unbeaten with a Win in Flight 1 Doubles
RESULTS
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell had at least one player or doubles team advance to the quarterfinal round in all five flights it was in as it opened play at the Bison Open on Friday at the Varsity Courts.
"For the most part we're playing really well and fighting through some tough matches," Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt said. "Even some of the losses were very good matches. We just need to take every match opportunity, win or lose, and learn something from it."
Included in the winners for Bucknell was the unbeaten doubles team of junior Paige Leavy and sophomore Cayla Koch. After winning the Bucknell Fall Invite with four victories two weeks ago, the duo improved to 5-0 with a 6-0 win over a team from Binghamton in the first round.
Two Bucknell doubles teams advanced on day one as sophomore Rachel Carroll and freshman Abby Markel teamed up for the first time in a 7-6 win over a team from Marist. They are now in the semifinal round.
The Bison put forth their best singles performance in Flight 3, where three players posted victories. Schuyler La Barge had the team's most exciting match of the day, outlasting Villanova's Ellie Zimmerman 5-7, 6-4, 12-10. Senior Danielle Gannon and Markel won their matches in straight sets, with Gannon defeating Villanova's Zoe Speaker and Markel making her collegiate debut with a win over Binghamton's Regina Furer.
Koch improved to 3-1 in singles on the season and kept Bucknell's hopes of winning a Flight 1 singles title for the second straight tournament alive with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Niagara's Chinda Som. Koch will take on Villanova's Lexi Denucci in the quarterfinals.
In Flight 2, Sofia Ayuso also improved to 3-1 with her 6-0, 6-2 win over IUP's Katya Minchenkova, a First Team All-PSAC selection after posting a 30-11 record last season. Ayuso will now play Binghamton's Emma Deimling in the quarterfinal round.
Play will resume Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and will conclude on Sunday.
