PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 20 Bucknell men's water polo team wrapped up the Bruno Classic with a tight 12-11 loss to No. 8 Pepperdine on Sunday afternoon.
The Bison, who went 4-1 over the course of the two-day tournament, scored the final three goals of the contest to draw within one, but the Waves (3-1) ultimately held on for the victory.
Marko Djordjevic paced the Bucknell attack, totaling four goals and an assist. Rade Joksimovic had yet another strong outing, posting a hat trick and two helpers; he finished Bucknell's opening weekend of action with 36 points (24g-12a), an average of 7.20 per contest.
Beyond Djordjevic and Joksimovic, Cooper Dolan (1g-2a), Logan Schofield (2g) and Jared Stanley (1g-1a) registered multi-point efforts against Pepperdine. Stanley also led the Bison with four steals while Schofield drew a team-best seven ejections. In net, Jack Otto made six saves, including one on Curtis Jarvis right before Joksimovic completed his hat trick to pull Bucknell within a single strike.
At the end of the first quarter, the Bison held a 4-3 edge, bolstered by a Dolan power-play marker at the 1:19 mark. The Waves regrouped, taking a 6-4 advantage into the intermission behind a 3-0 second frame.
Pepperdine extended its lead to four by netting three of the third quarter's final four goals. Bucknell's 4-1 fourth quarter would not be enough to pull off the upset; it would have been the Bison's first victory over the Waves in nine chances.
After taking next week off, the Bison return to action by hosting the Bucknell Invitational from Saturday, Sept. 15 to Sunday, Sept. 16. They will face La Salle (Sept. 15, 11:15 a.m.), Washington & Jefferson (Sept. 15, 6:45 p.m.), Fordham (Sept. 16, 12:30 p.m.) and Salem International (Sept. 16, 6 p.m.).
