LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 14 Bucknell men's water polo team held off a furious Fordham comeback bid to move to 7-1 on the young season on Sunday at Kinney Natatorium.
The Bison downed the Rams, 9-7, behind a four-goal outing by Cooper Dolan and an 11-save performance by freshman Jack Otto. After Fordham pulled within a single strike with 1:25 remaining in regulation, Dolan took a feed from Jared Stanley and found the back of the cage on Bucknell's next possession; then, with 13 seconds left to play, Otto turned aside a Jake Miller-Tolt penalty shot to seal the victory.
At halftime, the Bison held a 4-1 lead. Dolan and Logan Schofield each netted two goals apiece during that frame while Marko Djordjevic posted three of his team-best four helpers. After Rade Joksimovic converted on a penalty shot to put Bucknell up by four at the 5:29 mark of the third quarter, the Rams began to battle back.Â
Fordam scored the next three goals to draw within one, at 5-4, with 7:15 remaining in the final frame. Bucknell responded, with Jared Stanley and Dolan netting goals less than a minute apart to make it a 7-4 game at the 5:08 mark.
Miller-Tolt then scored three of the next four goals to trim the Bison's edge to 8-7. The Ram junior, who led all players with five goals, scored one of those markers on the power play and one on a penalty shot.
For the Bison, Dolan (4g), Djordjevic (4a), Stanley (1g-2a) and Schofield (2g) enjoyed multi-point outings. Schofield drew eight ejections while Joksimovic and Jack Lewis tied for the team lead with three steals.
This is the second time in three years Bucknell has started 7-1. In 2016, the Bison won 11 of their first 12 games, ultimately finishing with a 23-5 record.
Bucknell returns to the Kinney Natatorium pool at 6 p.m. to face Salem.
