LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Maura Fiamoncini was named Bison Athlete of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, following a terrific showing in the javelin throw at the Penn Relays.
Fiamoncini, who has broken both the Bucknell and Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium records this year, placed second in a field of 12 championship-caliber competitors with a toss of 176 feet, 11 inches. That was looking good to be the winning mark, but Kylee Carter of Auburn threw 179-8 on her sixth and final attempt to nudge out Fiamoncini for the title by less than three feet.
The Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania, native continues to be one of the best throwers in both the Division I and Patriot League ranks. Fiamoncini has eclipsed the 170-foot barrier in three of her past four meets; she also has the third-best mark in the country after tossing the javelin 184-5 feet at the Jim Taylor Invite last month. Mackenzie Little (192-4) of Stanford, and Alyssa Olin of North Dakota State (191-6) are the only athletes with better throws this year. Fiamoncini has also won two Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards this season; she won her first Patriot League honor on Apr. 3, and her second on Apr. 17.
The Bison will now prepare to compete in the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, which are set for May 4-5 at Lafayette. The final day of the meet will be streamed on the Patriot League Network at Patriot League.tv.
