BOSTON, Mass. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team was downed by Boston University, 9-6, in a defensive struggle on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
While the Bison (3-10, 1-5 Patriot League) twice drew within one after falling in an early hole, the Terriers (7-6, 3-3 Patriot League) never allowed them to even the score. The game proved to be a goalkeeper's duel, with Jamie DeWitt and Christine Laible each reaching the double digits in saves to hold her opponent under 10 goals.
DeWitt finished the day with 17 saves, a new career high. She topped her previous career high, set in Bucknell's 15-10 loss at Lafayette on March 28, by one and has reached the double digits in saves in eight of 13 games. For Boston University, Laible stopped 10 shots to earn the victory.
Boston University built a 4-1 lead in the contest's first 10 minutes, stringing together a 3-0 run after Lillie Hunt netted a sharp-angle goal to make it a 1-1 game. Bucknell's defense tightened up, keeping the Terriers from scoring a goal for nearly 15 minutes. During that span, Mary Margaret Kenney and Eve Lukowski found the back of the net to cut Boston University's lead to 4-3.
But the Terriers responded with two unanswered goals, including a free-position strike by Mackenzie Irvine that narrowly beat the buzzer, and carried a 6-3 advantage into the intermission.
The Bison came out strong in the second half, with Audrey Walsh and Kate Fiore netting back-to-back goals at the 23:06 and 20:45 marks to make it a 6-5 game.
After that, Boston University registered three goals in less than a three-minute stretch to secure its victory, which brought both its Patriot League record to .500. Kailey Conry, who led all players with four points (2g-2a), factored into all three of those goals, potting one and assisting on the other two.
Calabria capped the game's scoring, and snapped a 13-minute drought for both teams, with a free-position goal with 1:44 left to play. Calabria, who also assisted on Walsh's goal, led the Bison with two points.
Jessie Britton led all players with five ground balls while Callie DeWitt paced Bucknell with three caused turnovers.
The Terriers led in shots (36-24) and draw controls (12-5) while the Bison owned the advantage in ground balls (31-25). Boston University turned the ball over five fewer times and held Bucknell to 24-for-32 on its clears.
After hosting Loyola on Wednesday, April 18 at 6 p.m., the Bison travel to Lehigh for a match on Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
