PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bucknell women's lacrosse team edged Ohio State, 10-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Mt. Lebanon High School.
The Bison (3-9, 1-4 Patriot League) used a 7-1 run that stretched from the 21:43 mark of the first half to the 16:28 mark of the second to build a 9-4 lead, which proved too much for the Buckeyes (5-8, 1-3 Big Ten) to overcome even though they rallied to draw within a single strike with 5:08 remaining in the game.
After Molly Wood made it a 9-8 game, Mary Margaret Kenney gave Bucknell needed breathing room by capitalizing on a free-position attempt with 3:46 on the clock. The Bison defense held fast the rest of the way, only giving up one shot on target.
Jamie DeWitt was outstanding in net, turning aside 13 shots. Five of her saves came on free-position attempts, including one in the final minute of regulation that effectively sealed the victory for the Bison.
Eve Calabria recorded three of her game-best four points (3g-1a) during Bucknell's 7-1 run. She, Kenney (2g) and Morgan Steinhacker (2g) enjoyed multi-point outings.
At first, it looked like this game might turn into a barnburner, as the teams combined for six goals in the first 10 minutes. But, after Calabria ended a 3-0 Buckeye run with a free-position goal to knot the game at three apiece at the 21:43 mark, both offenses went silent. Kate Fiore ultimately snapped a 17:06 scoring drought with a free-position goal at the 4:37 mark, giving the Bison a 4-3 lead. Then, Steinhacker found the back of the net with 32 seconds left in the half to make it a 5-3 game in Bucknell's favor.
The Bison came out strong in the second half, scoring four of its first five goals to build their 9-4 advantage. The Buckeyes stormed back into the game with a 4-0 run that extended from the 14:13 mark to the 5:08 mark, but Kenney and DeWitt foiled their comeback bid.
Draw controls were key to Bucknell's success. The Bison held a 14-6 advantage in this statistical category, to go along with their slim leads in shots (29-24) and ground balls (18-15). Katherine Doyle led the way with seven while Steinhacker added four and Kenney collected two.
Twins Jamie and Callie DeWitt tied for the game high with five ground balls while Sarah Galzerano and Sophia Klaber each caused a turnover.
For the Buckeyes, Baley Parrott (2g-1a) and Liza Hernandez (2g) led the way offensively while Jill Rizzo made 11 saves.
Bucknell is now 3-0 when it holds its opponent under 10 goals. The Bison previously allowed four at Robert Morris and nine at American.
This was Bucknell's final non-conference game of the 2018 campaign. The Bison resume Patriot League action at Boston University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
