LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 20 Bucknell men's water polo team outlasted George Washington, 13-12, to stretch its home winning streak to 22 games on Sunday afternoon.
The Bison (13-2, 7-1 MAWPC East) and Colonials (13-5, 5-2 MAWPC East) were deadlocked at seven apiece entering halftime. During the first half, the teams were tied seven times, and neither side could build more than a single strike of separation.
Bucknell built its first two-goal cushion behind a 3-0 run that stretched from the 4:22 to the 1:05 marks in the third quarter. Rade Joksimovic kicked off the run by converting on a penalty shot; he then took a feed from Jack Lewis and beat Matt Taylor to make it a 9-8 game with 2:01 on the clock. After Marko Djordjevic extended the Bison's edge to 10-8, George Washington struck with just 13 seconds left on the clock to once again make it a one-goal game.
Just when it looked like Bucknell would enter the fourth quarter up by a 10-9 margin, Djordjevic sent a long shot on net that was tipped over Taylor's head, just grazing his cap, by Logan Schofield. That goal, which beat the buzzer by six seconds, kicked off a 3-1 run that ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.
Jared Stanley netted power-play goals at the fourth quarter's 6:30 and the 3:24 marks, sandwiched around a George Washington strike, to make it a 13-10 game. While the Colonials found the back of the net twice in the final minute of regulation, they ran out of time to complete their comeback.
Djordjevic and Stanley each posted four goals and one assist while Lewis contributed five assists. Dolan recorded four assists, three of which came on Djordjevic strikes in the first quarter.
Schofield drew a team-best seven ejections while Lewis paced the Bison with three steals. In net, freshman Jack Otto made 10 saves.
Bucknell next attends the Harvard Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13 to Sunday, Oct. 14.
