LEWISBURG, Pa. – Brett Smith has been selected as one of 30 national candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must be in their senior year and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Smith has earned All-Patriot League honors in each of the last two seasons and was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2014. A Preseason All-Patriot League selection, he ranks in the top-five all-time in walks (78), at bats (668) and runs scored (133). Smith also ranks among the top-10 in games played (171), games started (171), hits (191) and triples (11).
A team captain, Smith and his teammates make frequent trips to local food banks in the area. A mechanical engineering major, Smith and fellow classmates are creating a tennis ball machine with the capability of reading the position of the player and being able to determine where to shoot the ball.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one men's finalist and one women's finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2017 College World Series in June.
