WEST POINT, N.Y. – Maddy Molinari scored four goals, Christina Manis handed out four assists, and the Bucknell women's lacrosse team picked up an 11-8 victory in its very first trip to West Point on Saturday at Michie Stadium. The Bison improved to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights fell to 4-6, 0-2 PL.
This is Army West Point's second varsity season, and the Black Knights came to Lewisburg last season, so this was Bucknell's inaugural game at the venerable Michie Stadium. The Bison never trailed in the game after jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead.
Sarah Galzerano, Courtney Burke and Molinari all scored in the first 5:22 to get Bucknell out to that fast start. Audrey Walsh assisted on the Molinari goal, and she would go on to finish with five points on two goals and three assists. Galzerano and Burke also scored two goals for the Bison, who assisted on eight of the 11 tallies on the day.
Army did pull within 3-2 on a pair of Rachel Hornick tallies, but another 3-0 run pushed the lead to 6-2. The Black Knights scored three in a row to draw within 6-5 early in the second half, but the theme continued when Bucknell's Galzerano, Molinari and Mary Margaret Kenney made it another three-goal spurt for a 9-5 advantage.
Army was able to pull within 9-7 before Walsh and Molinari added two insurance goals in the final 6:30.
Manuela Cortes led Army with four goals, while Hornick finished with three. Amy Johnston handed out a pair of assists.
Bison goalie Jamie DeWitt tallied seven saves, while Kayla Rowley stopped eight shots for Army.
Bucknell finished with a 25-23 edge in total shots and a 14-6 margin in draw controls. Molinari led the way with four draw controls, while Kenney, Erika Stube and Annie Gilbertson had three each. Stube also registered a team-high three caused turnovers, and Gilbertson, Molinari and Katherine Doyle notched two each.
The victory was No. 48 at Bucknell for head coach Randall Swope, which is now the most in program history.
With her four goals on the day, Molinari now has 99 in her career. That ties her with Ashley Evans for ninth place on Bucknell's all-time goals list.
Manis extended her school-record assist total to 84, and her 25 assists this season are now sixth-most in team history. Manis (142) and Molinari (139) continue to rank ninth and 10th, respectively, on Bucknell's career points list.
Gilbertson and Lucia Smircich now both have 69 career caused turnovers, tied for fifth-most in Bucknell history.
Next up for the Bison is a home date with Patriot League rival Lafayette on Wednesday night at Graham Field. The 7 p.m. game will air locally on WQMY-TV as well as online via the Patriot League Network.
