UPDATE: What a weekend of action for the PA Roadwarriors! The Bucknell alumni started the tourney by coming from 20 points down to defeat SuperNOVA 89-88 on Saturday. Charles Lee's layup with 0:11 left put PA Roadwarriors ahead, and they finished the game with a defensive stand to advance past a team of Villanova alums, who played much of the second half with four players after guard Scottie Reynolds left with an injury. On Sunday, Bucknell again rallied from a double-digit deficit, this time against The Untouchables, a team made up of former Pittsburgh players. This one was filled with drama, as Lee hit a late game-tying 3-pointer and then Cameron Ayers a go-ahead trey with three seconds remaining. But The Untouchables Brad Wanamaker made a wild scoop shot along the baseline at the buzzer, forcing overtime. PA Roadwarriors then fell a bucket short in OT, 90-88. Ayers finished with a game-high 28 points after recording 19 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday's win.
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The PA Roadwarriors, a basketball team made up primarily of Bucknell alumni, makes its debut on Saturday in The Basketball Tournament, a popular winner-take-all event that will have a $2 million grand prize this year. The PA Roadwarriors are the No. 11 seed in the Northeast Region and will take on sixth-seeded SuperNOVA, a Villanova alumni team, on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. at Philadelphia University. The game will be streamed live through Facebook Live.
Former Bison standout and current assistant coach John Griffin is the PA Roadwarriors general manager, and he has assembled an alumni team that bridges two glorious eras of Bucknell basketball. The roster includes Griffin, Abe Badmus, Donald Brown, Charles Lee and Chris McNaughton, who were key members of the 2005 and 2006 championship teams that won historic NCAA Tournament games over Kansas and Arkansas.
That group will be joined by a number of younger stars who have helped Bucknell win five of the last six Patriot League regular-season titles, resulting in NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2013 and NIT appearances in 2012, 2015 and 2016. Representing those teams are Darryl Shazier, Cameron Ayers, Bryson Johnson (coach), Joe Willman, Brian Fitzpatrick and 2016 graduate Chris Hass. Former Penn standout Mark Zoller, a two-time All-Ivy selection and Griffin's high school teammate at Saint Joe's Prep, is the only non-Bucknell member of the team.
Mike Muscala, Bucknell's all-time leading scorer who will be headed back to the NBA's Atlanta Hawks next season, is involved as a booster.
The PA Roadwarriors are filled with players who helped Bucknell earn a reputation as "Giant Killers" throughout the last decade, and on Saturday they will start play in the TBT against a Villanova alumni squad that features several members of the Wildcats' 2009 Final Four team.
The winner advances to the second round on Sunday and would play either third-seeded The Untouchables, a Pittsburgh alumni team, or 14th-seeded Sideline Cancer. The Super 16 will be held in Philadelphia on July 21-23 with the semifinals and finals in New York City on July 30 and August 2. All regional games are streamed online, with ESPN picking up coverage starting with the Super 16.
