QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team is 4-0 in the Patriot League for the first time in program history following its 7-0 win over Lafayette on Saturday at the Tennis Zone & Fitness Center. The Bison have won five consecutive matches to improve to 11-5 overall.
“We did what we needed to do today,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “Now we can put all our focus on Army.”
Senior Maria Cioffi continued to make her case for Patriot League Player of the Year, improving to a perfect 4-0 in league matches and 13-2 overall this spring with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Caroline Nixon, a Second Team All-Patriot League selection a year ago. Cioffi has won 12 straight matches, including two over returning All-League players.
Bucknell won all six singles matches in straight sets, including a dominant 6-0, 6-0 shutout by sophomore Madeline Melch at No. 6. Sophomore Lisa Jouravleva nearly did the same at No. 2, giving up just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Freshman Lauren Fishbein had the match-clinching win with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Junior Michele Urbinati was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 4, while senior Stephanie Pino cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5.
The Bison were just as dominant in the three doubles matches. Jouravleva and Fishbein teamed up for a 6-1 win at No. 2, while Pino and Emilie Bush prevailed by the same score at No. 3. Cioffi and Urbinati didn't face much trouble either with a 6-3 win on court one.
Bucknell has now won 17 straight matches over Lafayette dating back to 2001 to improve to 26-17-1 in the all-time series. The Bison's 11 wins on the season are their most since winning 14 in 2009.
The Bison now prepare for a tough matchup on Sunday at Army West Point, which was picked to finish second in the conference. The match is scheduled for 10 a.m.
