Women's Tennis Remains Unbeaten in PL with Shutout of Lehigh on Senior Day

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Maria Cioffi and Stephanie Pino won three-set matches on Senior Day, and the Bucknell women's tennis team won every close match in a 7-0 shutout victory over Lehigh on Wednesday. The Bison remained unbeaten in the Patriot League at 3-0 while improving their overall record to 9-5.
Matched up against the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-League selection in Christina Auyeung, Cioffi battled for a tough 6-7, 6-4, 10-4 win at No. 1 singles. She upped her winning streak to 10 consecutive matches while improving her record to 11-2 this spring.
Pino's Senior Day win came at No. 6 singles, where she recorded a 6-7, 6-0, 6-4 victory. It was the 45th singles win of her career, moving her into 18th on the program's all-time list.
Bucknell started the match on a high note, winning two of three doubles contests to take a 1-0 lead. Cioffi teamed with junior Michele Urbinati for a 6-3 win at No. 1, while sophomore Lisa Jouavleva and freshman Lauren Fishbein were 6-3 winners at No. 2.
The Bison then won the first three completed singles matches to put the match away early. Fishbein started the run with an easy 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3, and Urbinati followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4.
Freshman Mishi Papich clinched the match with a three-set win over Cassidy Cruz at No. 5. She dropped the first set 6-3, but responded with wins by 6-4, 6-1 scores. Jouravleva gave the Bison six winners in singles, prevailing 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 at No. 2.
“This was one of those matches that could have gone either way,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “Lehigh is a very solid team. We fought hard and today was our day.”
Lehigh fell to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks were picked to finish four in the league's preseason poll, while the Bison were tabbed fifth.
Bucknell will host Morgan State on Thursday at 4 p.m. The match will be held in Gerhard Fieldhouse.
