LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's track and field team turned in some quality results Sunday, wrapping up competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison set top-10 program marks in three events, while earning six new IC4A qualifiers.
Freshman Matthew Fay took first place in a field of 20 participants in the pole vault with a height of 16-2 ¾. The mark qualifies him for the IC4A Championships and ties Nathaniel Witter (2014) for the second-best height in program history. The freshman was just ¾-short of tying the school record.
After breaking the school record in the high jump Saturday, sophomore Nicholas Lombardo set a new top-10 program mark in the long jump. Lombardo took fourth in a field of 39 jumpers with a leap of 23-5 ½. The jump is also a new personal-record.
Freshman William Melchionni finished fifth out of 61 in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 48.62. The time is an IC4A-qualifying mark and ranks in the top-10 of the Bucknell record book. Freshman Wade Heidel took ninth in the event, but his time of 49.12 is an IC4A-qualifier.
Senior Grant Reynolds took fourth out of 33 in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.49, while senior Griffin Robertson finished eighth in the 200 with an IC4A-qualfying time of 21.94.
Freshman Scott Gulizio also qualified for the IC4As, taking eighth out of 133 in the 800 with a time of 1:52.16.
Senior Olu Shoyoye took seventh in the hammer throw, but his toss of 174-10 qualifies him for the IC4A Championships. Joseph Breen wrapped up a strong weekend Sunday with a third-place finish in the shot put. Breen recorded a heave of 54-1 in a field of 36 throwers.
A team comprised of senior Dan Gevirtz, freshman Rocco Ordille, Reynolds and Robertson finished third in the 4x100 relay, crossing the line in 41.93.
“It was a fantastic weekend both athletically and administratively,” says head coach Kevin Donner. “The performances across the board were as good as any regular season meet we have ever had and the athletes seem very excited about the weeks to come. Being at home was nice and two of the next three weeks we are at home.”
The Bison will be back at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium for the Bucknell Team Challenge, a one-day event, on Saturday.
