UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Greg Guers was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and four other Nittany Lions drove in a run apiece as the Bucknell baseball team lost to Penn State 8-1 Wednesday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Brett Smith, Danny Rafferty and Joe Ogren recorded hits for the Bison, who used seven pitchers in the contest.
Penn State (19-14) scored four runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to open up a seven-run cushion. Guers drove in two runs with a single in the third and one apiece on singles in the fourth and eighth innings.
Bucknell (14-21) scored its lone run in the sixth inning. Smith's leadoff double extended his hitting streak to a career-high-tying 12 games and he later scored on a sac fly by Spencer Stokes.
Nittany Lion starter Nick Hedge (4-1) earned the win in four innings of work. He struck out two and did not allow a run. Four relievers struck out five and allowed one hit and two walks in five innings of work.
Freshman Christian Tailor (1-2) started on the mound for Bucknell. He was touched for three runs on three hits in two-plus innings of work. Austin Zimmerman, Max Kra, Hunter Robichaux, Tommy Gambon, Mike Stephens and Rafferty came in out of the bullpen. Robichaux, Gambon and Stephens pitched the fifth through seventh innings and they allowed just one hit and no runs.
Bucknell, which plays at Penn State again next Tuesday, will return to Patriot League play this weekend with a four-game series at Lafayette.
