BALTIMORE, Md. -- It was a long afternoon for the Bucknell men's lacrosse team on Saturday at the Ridley Athletic Complex, as No. 15/17 Loyola parlayed a seven-goal second quarter into a 14-3 verdict. Sean O'Brien had two goals and an assist for the Bison, who fell to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League.
Jordan Germershausen paced Loyola (6-3, 3-1 PL) with three goals, and Pat Spencer had a goal and six assists as the Greyhounds avenged an overtime loss to Bucknell last season in Lewisburg.
Loyola outshot Bucknell 48-43 and won 13 of 21 faceoffs. The Bison had a 15-14 shot advantage in the first quarter but trailed 2-0. Goalies Christian Klipstein and Jacob Stover both had five saves in the period to keep their teams in it, but then the Greyhounds exploded for seven goals in the second quarter, including two in the final 29 seconds, to go up 9-1 at the half.
O'Brien scored Bucknell's lone first half goal off a feed from Tommy O'Connor at the 8:36 mark to make it a 4-1 game at the time, but the Bison would not score again until Quinn Collison hit the net off an O'Brien feed with 5:14 left in the fourth quarter. O'Brien closed out the scoring with a goal from a John Reed assist in the final minute.
Jarett Witzal went 5-for-10 at the faceoff spot for the Bison. Alex Spring led the team with four ground balls, while Brad Dotson and Matt Gilray had three apiece.
All three Bison goalies saw action. Klipstein finished with eight saves, Brac McKee had six with only one goal against, and Joey Altemus tallied one save. Stover logged 12 stops for the Greyhounds, while Grant Limone had two in relief.
Bucknell is back on the road next Saturday at Army West Point at 3:30 p.m.
