ORLANDO, Fla. – Senior Nick Bybel was 2-0 in singles as the Bucknell men's tennis team split matches with Quinnipiac and Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday. The Bison remained at .500 on the year, moving to 7-7 overall.
Quinnipiac improved to 7-4 overall with the win over the Bison, while Fairleigh Dickinson dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
Bucknell opened the day with a 5-2 loss to Quinnipiac, but the match could have gone either way. The Bison lost two doubles matches in a tiebreaker and fell in three of the four singles matches that reached three sets.
Bybel had no trouble in his win over 2014 MAAC Rookie of the Year Kei Ezak at No. 1 singles, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Ezak added Second Team All-MAAC honors at No. 1 singles last season. Junior Bryan Adams was the Bison's other winner in singles against the Bobcats, beating Willem van Biezen 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2.
The Bison reversed their fortunes in close matches in the victory over the Knights, winning one doubles match in a tiebreak and two singles matches in three sets. Bybel didn't need a third set as he beat Jacob Whalley 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. Whalley was the 2014 NEC Rookie of the Year and was Second Team All-NEC last season.
Winning in three sets for the Bison were freshman Andrei Vitiuc at No. 5 singles and sophomore Timber Erskine at No. 6. Sophomore Daniel Wright won his match at No. 2 singles in straight sets.
Bucknell swept the doubles portion of the match, including a 7-6 (4) victory by Max Kane and Erskine at No. 2. Bybel and Adams were 6-3 winners at No. 1, while Wright and Ben Gerber won by the same score at No. 3.
