Men's Tennis Falls to N. Illinois, Beats Babson on First Day of Spring Trip

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Bucknell men's tennis team split the first two matches of its spring break trip in Florida on Sunday. The Bison opened with a 5-1 loss to a red-hot Northern Illinois team before bouncing back with a 7-0 shutout of Babson.
Senior Nick Bybel was Bucknell's lone winner in singles against Northern Illinois and teamed with Bryan Adams for a victory at No. 1 doubles. The win at No. 1 singles came in comeback fashion against Carlos Manzanas. After he dropped the first set 6-3, Bybel tied the match with a 6-3 decision in the second set. He dominated the deciding set 10-1.
Bybel and Adams were 6-4 winners over Manzanas and Austin Russell at first doubles. The Bison were competitive in the other two doubles matches, falling 6-4 at No. 2 and 6-3 at No. 3.
Freshman Andrei Vitiuc nearly knocked off Tom Hjertonsson at No. 4 singles, falling 6-4, 6-7, 10-7. Hjertonsson is up to 20 wins during the fall and spring seasons combined. Sophomore Daniel Wright was also close to getting a win while playing at No. 2 singles. He was locked in a 3-3 tie in the third set against Louis-Philippe Hamel before the match was called due to rain.
Northern Illinois improved to 11-5 with its eighth win in 10 matches.
Bucknell evened its record at 6-6 with the win over Babson. Bybel completed a perfect 4-0 day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles and a 7-5 win while teaming with Adams at No. 1 doubles.
Wright, Max Kane, Adams, Vitiuc and Ben Gerber all won in straight sets.
The Bison will have Monday off before playing two matches on Tuesday. They will play Quinnipiac at 10:30 a.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m.
