LEWISBURG, Pa. – In early January, members of the Bucknell women's rowing team had the opportunity to take an important winter training trip to Elberton, Georgia, as the Bison continue to prepare for this spring's competition schedule. Bucknell stayed at Richard B. Russell State Park and rowed on Lake Russell, which was the 1996 Olympic Training site for nine countries, and provides miles of sheltered rowable water and minimal boat traffic.
Bucknell's five coaches and 37 student-athletes made the trip south and lived in cottages by the lake, enabling team bonding in addition to rowing. The team practiced for two or three hours each morning and afternoon, followed by group sessions on land in between.
“This was our 14th trip to Georgia,” commented Bison head coach Stephen Kish, a 1992 Bucknell graduate who is in his 20th year at the helm of the Bison program. “Lake Russell has a boathouse, ample dock space and a four-lane, 2,000-meter buoyed course, making it a great site for us.
“With spring semester classes underway, we have transitioned back to the erg and weight rooms, and the team is working together and looking forward to the day we can get back on the Susquehanna River. Hopefully that will be sooner rather than later.”
